Daytona Beach is a Florida surf-and-sand family destination that offers just as much off the beach as on it, with everything from miniature golf and go-karts to aquatic safaris and a children's museum (see 15 Reasons to Bring the Kids to Daytona Beach). If your family likes the beach but needs to be active off the sand, too, you might be interested in the latest offering from The Shores Resort & Spa. This AAA Four-Diamond resort, set on a barrier island, features miles of white-sand beach, personalized concierge service, oceanfront pools, complimentary kids' club, tennis, and oceanside firepits for nighttime s'mores.
The Shores' Family Grand Adventure package, available from June 1 through September 30, bundles lodging with a resort credit plus a bucketful of activities. But is it a good deal for families? We crunched the numbers to find out. The package includes:
- two nights' lodging (worth $169/night x 2 nights = $338 in a river view double room)
- all-access tour at Daytona International Speedway (worth $22/adult x 2 adults + $17/child ages 6-12 x 2 = $78)
- admission to Ponce Inlet Lighthouse ($5/adult x 2 + $1.50/child age 11 and under x 2 = $13)
- admission to the Marine Science Center (worth $5/adult x 2 + $2/child ages 3-12 x 2 = $14)
- mini golf at Congo River Golf (worth$11/adult x 2 + $9/child ages 5-10 x 2 + $40)
- $100 resort credit (worth $100)
- bag of beach toys (a value of $10)
We test-booked an August weekend stay for a family of two adults and two kids under 11, and found a package rate of $534. If the same components were booked separately, the total would come to $593, or $59 more than the package price.
Deal or no deal? Depends on how busy you like to be. If your family will visit all the listed attractions, you would save 10% with the package. But if mini golf and a trip to the Speedway aren't on your to-do list, you're better off booking your room only.
The package must be booked by June 30, and rates do not include a $17/day resort fee or taxes. You can book the offer online, but we found that often it came up as not available. We had better luck calling directly 866/396-2217 and asking for the Family Grand Adventure package.
