We've said it before—in our 20 Recession Travel Rules—and we'll say it again: If you have a destination in mind for a vacation, check out its tourist-board web site (a.k.a. Convention & Vistors Bureau) to look for coupons and hot deals. Hawaii's tourist boards, in particular, have a great track record for collecting specials on specific islands, and throughout the recession, lots of hotels and tour operators on the islands have been slashing rates.

The Kauai CVB, for instance, has just put up a big slate of spring specials, including discounts for small inns, hotels and luxe condos. Most offers promise at least 20% off, and many last until late June, so they could potentially be summer vacation deals if your kids’ school lets out by then.

One great offer that caught our eye: 50% off on one- or two-bedroom condos at the all-oceanfront Castle Poipu Shores— $229 for a one-bedroom (down from $458) or $255 for a two-bedroom (down from $510). Set on the coastal cliffs in Poipu, a village on Kauai’s south side, the property's condos have fully-equipped kitchens, washers and dryers, and Internet connections; there's also a freshwater pool, beach and access to the tennis, golf and horseback riding at bearby Poipu Beach Resort.
