If there's one thing we love more than a fresh s'more on a summer evening, it's the chance to stay at a nice resort for under $100 a night. Come summertime, that's a good reason to head to the desert, where rates are often lower than the temperatures. At Phoenix's upscale Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa, the new Dine-In and Dive-In Summer Rates start at $79 a night if you pre-book by June 13. Even if you book after June 13, rates start at $89. When we tested dates online, we discovered that those $79 and $89 rates were, no suprise, only available for midweek stays; weekend rates started at $115 a night. That’s still not bad, given that come fall, weekend prices jump to $179 and up.

Another plus: The Wigwam recently upped its family-friendly factor with new activities such as weekly animal encounters (like a reptile petting zoo), tennis clinics and poolside games such as water balloon volleyball. At the spa, little gals get a free mini-manicure with mom’s paid treatment, and on the resort’s three 18-hole championship courses, kids under 15 play free with a paying adult. Inside the resort—key for this time of year—there’s a game room that offers the latest Xbox, PS3 and Wii games. Weekend nights feature events such as fireside marshmallow roasting and s’ mores, dive-in movies or Native American storytellers.
