Deal or no deal? Watersports package at Hawaii's posh Kona Village

For an unplugged but assuredly posh paradise escape with no TV or video arcade, check out the award-winning and exclusive Kona Village, once an ancient fishing village on the Big Island's Kohala Coast. Nowadays the 82-acre enclave made up of Polynesian-style, thatched-roof bungalows, coconut trees, tropical plants, black lava, and white sand beaches. Rates typically include all meals and most activities, such as the daily kids' program, snorkeling along the secluded coastline or catch-and-release pole fishing in the resort ponds. Talk about getting away from it all: rooms have no phones, radios or TVs. There is, however a gym, spa, free tennis courts and  twice-weekly luaus. The kids' club for ages 5 to 12 runs all year (except May and September) and features daily fishing contests, crab-catching, coconut painting, as well as ball games and visits to the pool. Teens can take part in such activities such as kayaking, snorkeling tours, sailing lessons or volleyball.

The resort also offers some Summer Travel packages that bundle in more perks. One that caught our eye for families is the Alaka i Nalu Ocean Adventure Package, which requires a minimum four-night stay and includes:

  • four nights in a thatched roof bungalow for two people (usually starts at $555/night for two, with meals included. There's an additional charge of $140/night per child ages 5–9; $185/night for ages 10–12; and $250/night for teens. Kids 4 and under stay and eat free)
  • three meals per day (included in most rates already)
  • one day of unlimited non-motorized Ocean Activities for 2 people  (worth $135/adult, or $270)

We couldn't book online for a family of four—the booking engine just kept displaying the package for two people—but we were able to get the package by calling the reservations line directly. First, we price-checked what it would cost to book a four-night stay in July without the package. For a family of four with two grade-school kids, we were quoted an all-inclusive plan for $1,140 a night.  If we added a day of unlimited watersports for two adults, the price rose by $270 to $4,830 for that four-night stay. By booking the package, the price came down to $3,520—still an upscale pricetag, but now at a 27% savings. And you still don’t have to have the hotel TV as your vacation's background music.

Note: Kids 12 and under can't use the watersports equipment without an accompanying adult. The cost to add kids to the watersports element is $135 per child.

Deal or no deal? Still a splurge, for sure, but one that's made sweeter with a 27% savings.

To book this package for a family, call 800/367-5290 and mention the Alaka i Nalu Ocean Adventure Package.
