Bahama Bargain: Play at Atlantis for a pittance

Dreaming of escaping to the Bahamas for fall break? At the top of your kids' wish list is the chance to check out Atlantis, the famously high-octane megaresort. At the top of your wish list: A vacation bill that doesn't empty the family coffers. We've come across a nice compromise that gives everyone what they want.

Comfort Suites Paradise Island features a nice pool, restaurant, free Continental breakfast, and rooms spacious enough for spreading out during family downtime. But what really sets this property apart is a key perk: guests get unlimited, free access to its higher-profile next-door neighbor, Atlantis. This sets you up for a money-savvy end-around. For a fraction of what it would cost to stay at Atlantis, you can enjoy the resort's 141-acre Aquaventure waterpark, 10 pools, beaches, lazy river rides, health spa, tennis, golf, and kids' camp.  Plus, you get signing privileges in all of Atlantis's restaurants and lounges.

Comfort Inn's Paradise Vacation Value promotion is good for stays through December 23, with rates starting at $78 per adult, per night. Kids 15 and under stay free.  When we priced a four-night stay in November for a family of four, we found a nightly rate of $187 for a junior suite with sofabed. In comparison, rates at Atlantis for the same dates begin at $299 a night.  Consider, too, that some cruise lines charge north of $100 per adult and $75 per child for the privilege of coming ashore to spend a single day at Atlantis. Suddenly, that little perk adds up to a blockbuster benefit.
