Holy back pain. Traveling with little ones and schlepping all their stuff can sure make you feel like a pack mule. The good news? There eventually comes a day–clouds part, angels sing–when your kids can carry their own gear. Getting them to do it without complaining? Well, that's another story.
To the rescue comes the L.L.Bean Rolling Adventure Duffle. It’s lightweight yet made of durable nylon with a water-resistant coating (prints are made of a tough polyester). In-line skate wheels (think ball bearings) roll easily and steadily, and there’s no sagging or dragging, thanks to the duffle’s rigid bottom. We also like that it comes in 15 colors—11 solids, four prints—and can be spot-cleaned. Another huge plus: When empty, this bag flattens nicely and takes up little room in a closet or under a bed.
This month, we’re giving away two Rolling Adventure Duffle bags–one in the large size (15"h x 30"w x 13"d) and another in the medium size (11"h x 23"w x 11"d) which conforms to carry-on size when not overpacked. The lucky winner can choose the colors and even have the duffles monogrammed. This prize has a retail value of $169.
How to enter: In the comments, tell us what single item is at the top of your son or daughter's packing list. In other words, what won't your kid leave home without? On May 31, we’ll choose one winner at random. Good luck!

The single item that my son won't leave home without is actually his set of 4 CARS, Lightning McQueen, Mr. the King, Re-Volting and Chick. He takes them to bed, to the bathroom, to daycare, to the store, out to play in the yard, out to eat, everywhere he goes. Needless to say we have secret backups in our pockets at all times ... just in case.

My daughter Geneva would never leave home without her treasured teddybear, Darrin, whom she left in more hotels than we can count causing us to frantically return to retrieve him each time. But the time she stuffed him in the tiny freezer of the mini refrigerator in a Tampa hotel because she later said he was "too hot in Florida" was the last time. It took three members of the hotel staff searching three different times to finally find him. The mad dash we made from Sarasota back to the hotel and then to catch our flight in Tampa prompted a new house rule: Darrin is forbidden to leave her bedroom in the future. He just can't be trusted.

My oldest daughter, 17, cannot go anywhere without her phone! It is in her hand constantly.
The youngest, 10, loves her Nintendo DS. It is small even with a few games and the charger packed, and occupies her during long waits.
(The other item is a pink/blue teddy bear she's had since she was 2! Dirty with the ears chewed off. But don't tell her I told you!)

My youngest son fell in love with a stuffed buffalo while on a trip to Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota four years ago. "Buffy" goes with him on overnight trips to Grandma's house, camping trips, anytime we are away from home. Buffy has quite a few miles on him, and we even bought an identical "back up" a couple of years ago so he is always around when we need him. When tucking my son in at night, I still smile when I see him hugging his favorite stuffed bison!

Depends on where we are going, but usually, even if it's to town (6 miles away), 6-year old must have books, a Lego item (yes, this is risky), and his Sigg water bottle. The 3-year old follows suit with some sort of book, a bag full of matchbox cars, and HIS (smaller) Sigg water bottle. At least they are always hydrated! Of course, Mom or Day MUST remember the snacks, as EXTREME hunger always sets in about 100yds out of the driveway!

The one thing that stays consistent with my eight year old daughter is that her stuffed cat named Kitty always takes the number one spot on her packing list! Every morning before she leaves for school my child tucks this cat into bed. That's how attached she is to Kitty! Kitty has made numerous appearances at Disney World, and she sometimes likes to build sand castles on the Gulf of Mexico. She dislikes the salt water though! When she's not frolicking on the beach she enjoys camping in our family's Fifth Wheel RV. Oh, if Kitty could talk, but sometimes it's probably best that she can't! My daughter has had Kitty since birth, and hopefully for many more years to come. She is truly my girl's best friend!!!

At 2 it was the soft stuffed bear called "Baby" for sleeping and a matchbox car to hold in his hand all day. At 6, it was any book about trucks. At 9 it was Where's Waldo to pass the time. At 11, Harry Potter and Redwall adventures. By 13 it became the cell phone and still Harry. At 16 he'll bring along his summer reading assignment, but will have traded the matchbox car for a shift in the drivers seat of the van.

My 7 year will not put on clothes or pack until he sees me holding his tiger stuffed animal that has one leg hanging on by the thread that I keep trying to sew up! Tiger has to go on top of all his packed items so that he can breathe. He also trys to cram all of his small trucks and spongebob season 1 into his bag but it doesnt all fit. These duffel bags would really come in handy! Thanks

My son won't leave home without permission first. He is 12 years old and I think its great that he still respects the need for his supervision. Tyler is a great kid and he is hoping to make his first trip to visit his aunt in Nebraska this summer.

My 19-month old son just learned the word "take" which he says while clutching something/anything to his chest. This has expanded the things we walk out the door with, but he ALWAYS needs to have his "sleepy puppy" - a little blanket with a puppy head on the corner.

Both of our children are fantastic travellers. We live in Canada and my parents live in the US. We have been all over the world and feel our children need to be a part of the planning process for them to really enjoy the trips.
The one thing our children cannot go without are their stuffed animals. We even bought mini sleeping bags so that the childrens "animals" have their own bed when we travel.

My kids all love to have their DS on trips. And if we are taking a car trip, they insist on bringing their own pillows.

That would be Baby Lucy. Baby Lucy is a doll that my daughter has had by her side since infancy. She is a baby doll that had no teeth. No hair. My daughter decided that Baby Lucy needed to grow, too. So she drew hair on her head, and stuffed white tissue into her mouth to replicate "teeth." Along the way, Baby Lucy has lost one set of eyelashes and most of her clothes. She is my daughter's baby, so I guess that makes Baby Lucy my first grandchild. In fact, I kiss them both goodnight.
