Super summer deals in Kaua’i

For mainlanders, the Hawaiian islands can feel like a long and pricey haul, especially in a down economy. But help is just a few mouse clicks away. The Kaua’i Visitors Bureau has been working that much harder to entice families across the Pacific and just released a slate of Summer Specials, which include lots of condos on or near the beaches, and even some big-brand resorts.

One family-friendly deal that especially caught our eye: The Hilton Kauai Beach Resort, north of Lihue, which has a fifth-night-free deal through the end of December. Rates start at $169 a night, and you also get a free aiport shuttle rides. The resort has four pools—including a sand-bottomed, freshwater one—a kid-pleasing waterslide, and easy access to the beach.

If you want more space—or are thinking of bringing the grandparents—check out the deals for Whaler's Cove condos in Poipu, which is promising a luau-worthy 50% break on rates. We saw special prices at around $300 a night for one- or two-bedroom ocean-view condos (some up to 1,400 square feet), with fully equipped kitchens, washer-dryers and daily housekeeping. You also get access to a pool, barbecues, and a snorkeling cove. Stay seven nights and you save an extra $20 per night.

The Kaua’i site also lists activity discounts, such as breaks on catamaran and kayaking tours, which a good reminder of our recession travel rule no. 11: Snag CVB deals. Wherever you head this summer, always scope out its tourist board web site for a fresh selection of special offers.
