Deal or no deal? Build-a-Bear package in NYC

As if we needed proof that kids and stuffed animals have a magnetic attraction, a visit to Build-a-Bear Workshop hammers it home.  What began a decade ago as a smattering of suburban mall-based, make-your-own-teddy-bear stores is now a retail empire with over 150 locations around the globe, including one on New York City’s Fifth Avenue.

Now through December 31, two Manhattan Doubletree Hotels are offering a “Beary Fun Package” with Build-a-Bear.  We took a closer look to find out if it makes sense for families. The package includes:
  • accommodations at either the Doubletree Metropolitan New York City or Guest Suites Times Square (on a weeknight in May, rates run $289/night for a room at the Metropolitan or $269/night for a suite at the Times Square property)
  • one "Bear Bunk Trunk," which is a fold-out Build-a-Bear trunk containing a bear-sized blanket-and-pillow set, bear dental kit with toothbrush, toothpaste and floss (additional trunks can be purchased for $25 each)

Purchased separately, you'd pay $269 for an overnight stay at Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square (midweek in May) plus $25 for the Build-a-Bear trunk, or a total of $294.  Even a bear could do the math on this one: Opting for the package at $279 saves you a whopping $15.  There's no price cut on the room. Instead, Doubletree is essentially passing on a deal on the bear goods. We think you’d be better off paying $269 for the suite and, if your kids have their hearts set on a stuffed souvenir from the Big Apple, taking your $25 to Build-a-Bear Workshop with a ubituitous $5-off coupon and getting not only a wider selection but more bang for your buck.

Keep in mind that room rates vary considerably depending on when you stay. Weekend visits in May will cost substantially more than midweek. The package rate for a Friday in May at the Doubletree Times Square is $449, but the savings are equally lackluster.

Note: Read the cancellation policy on this deal carefully. You’re required to pay in full at the time you book. There's no refund if you cancel less than one day before your arrival.

Deal or no deal? "Beary" disappointing. (Cue groans.)
