There's a lot for families to like about The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. The historic grande dame features a top-notch spa, world-class golf course, nightly movies shown in its own theater, and an award-winning kids' club. The resort is known for its luxurious, traditional surroundings and an extensive roster of activities, from carriage rides, bowling, and horseback riding to skeet shooting and fly-fishing. Most of these activities are not included in the room rate.
Through April 30, The Homestead is offering a Take Two Activity Package that's a straightforward BOGO deal: buy one activity, get one of equal or lesser value for free. To get the most out of this deal, you should choose pricey activities. Your selected activities must be on the same day and at the same venue, and free spa treatments are available every day except Saturday. That's one good reason to aim for midweek. Another is that the promo rate starts at $199 a night midweek, compared to $240 a night on weekends.
Unfortunately, you're in for a letdown when you follow our recession travel rule no. 22 and confirm the fine print. This promo rate does not include taxes ($16 a night if you opt for the least expensive room) or the 15% resort fee (starting at a whopping $30 a night). Sigh. Resort fees have such a nasty way of taking the shine off a deal.
