Deal or no deal? Two Chicago family weekend getaways

Looking for a fun getaway during the holiday season? VisitChicagoLand.com  has launched a slew list of packages to lure folks to the Windy City area this season. Two deals jumped out at us for big-time kid appeal:

The 473-room Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, located a half hour outside Chicago, is offering a $119-a-night "Santa's Workshop package" through December 21, which includes:

  • One night lodging, based on a two-night weekend stay (regular rates start at $129)
  • $25 voucher for breakfast on one morning
  • tickets for kids to make gingerbread houses and other crafts at the resort’s Craft Corner (worth $15 apiece)
  • Kids can also participate in a free evening storytime in the resort's library, an exclusive for package guests
By booking this package, you immediately save at least $10 a night on your room and the other components are worth at least $60 per family. So your total savings is at least $70 a night.

Deal or no deal? A deal that jingles all the way.

Another enticing option: The Legoland Discovery Center Package, which has you staying at the Embassy Suites in nearby Shaumburg and has added appeal for Legophiles.  The package, which starts at $120, includes tickets for a family of four to the indoor, 30,000-square-foot Legoland Discovery Center theme park, as well as a complimentary hot breakfast for everyone. Each room in the all-suites hotel features a kitchenette and there's an indoor pool, too. This package is available through December 30, on weekends only. Is it a deal? Let's calculate what's included:
  • One night lodging (regular “best rates” start at $119 a night)
  • Breakfasts (always free for guests, so no added value in the package)
  • Legoland tickets for a family of four (worth $68)
If you purchased the elements of this package on your own, you'd pay at least $187which translates to a minimum savings of $67 a night.

Deal or no deal? A great value for the ho-ho-holidays.
