National park guidebooks get more family-friendly

Lonely Planet, the guidebook publishing company, is relaunching its excellent series on national parks with four titles that are hot off the press: Yosemite, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks; Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks; Grand Canyon National Park; and Banff, Jasper and Glacier National Parks. What caught my attention are the brand new chapters on "Kids & Pets" with recommendations for family hikes that are doable with children in tow. In the Yellowstone guide, for example, authors Bradley Mayhew and Carolyn McCarthy recommend hikes to Wraith Falls, on the Mammoth to Tower-Roosevelt Road; Trout Lake, in the park's northwest corner, and Ribbon Lake, near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The authors also point out that Yellowstone is a great place to learn an activity by attending a fly-fishing clinic, rock-climbing course or horseback-riding excursion. Note that the list price on this paperback is $20, but it can be had from Amazon for just $13.59.
