Weekender: Distinctive destinations

Portsmouth NHLooking for a new great family getaway destination? How about a French colonial village in Missouri or an old New England seaport that dates to 1623? Maybe an erstwhile mission in California? Or a scenic mountain town in the Rockies? Every year since 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has selected 12 vacation destinations across the United States that offer "an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation and revitalization." To date, there are 108 Distinctive Destinations located in 42 states throughout the country. In each community, residents have taken forceful action to protect their town’s character and sense of place. Picturesque, historic, and beautifully maintained, each of these places make for a super overnight destination or even a daytrip. The 12 new inductees honored in 2008 are:
